Temporary Residents and Dependants (other than Refugee, Humanitarian, Protection and Safe Haven visa holders)

The Education Directorate welcomes the dependants of temporary residents to enrol in ACT public schools from Preschool through to Year 12, noting that Preschool is not within the mandatory years of schooling and placement is subject to availability. Priority Enrolment Areas in the ACT apply.

Temporary residents should maintain adequate schooling arrangements for their dependants and enrolment in an ACT public school is generally accepted for the length of the visa. Temporary residents submit their documentation to the International Education Unit prior to being able to complete online enrolment. The exceptions are Diplomats (including holders of Special Purpose visas under the Status of Forces Agreement) and New Zealand citizens holding a NZ passport who, similar to Australian permanent residents, enrol directly at schools.

Some visa classifications are subject to tuition fees for the enrolment of dependants of temporary residents and details are in the chart below.

Applicants on a Bridging visa are assessed against their previous visa subclass and tuition fees (if liable) are exempt once the permanent visa is granted and evidence provided, noting that there may be entitlement to a partial refund. All permanent visas give the holder permanent residency and, as such, access to all Australian government services regardless of whether they arrive on a Refugee, Humanitarian, Protection, Skilled, Family or Business visa.

Visitor visa holders are required to pay the application fee and short term tuition fees for school enrolment, with an enrolment period of 5 (minimum) to 10 (maximum) weeks.
